This is a commission done of a woman's grandfather's home village. The old color photo I worked from was badly washed out so I had to fake it to a large degree. I felt tight working this way and choked on an early smaller version. I loosened up on this bigger one and she got a deal as the price didn't go up.
I'm basically happy with this one within the limitations of working from the photo. Even though I often work from photo's, usually I take them myself and more importantly, I was at the place and can remember the feeling to a degree, especially if I do the painting within 24 hours of when I took the photo. That's my theory... Anyway, when you believe something is true the brain gives you that extra confidence. I missed that confidence here, but don't feel I failed, especially as the client is very happy, thank God

Sweeeet. I think it worked out quite well for you, using that washed out photo made you really come up with some interesting color. That little figure and the Volkswagen are placed perfectly. Nice juicy impastos on there, your paint handling is especially good on this piece.

I love the simple brushstrokes on the mountains and how their color separates them from the trees.
And just where was this village?
I feel like I'm on a very steep hill, or on a roof, and the power lines are going way up to a point behind and above me. The VW looks like a phantom, a ghost bug! I like it.

This was a hate then love one the first one went wrong, but the second was ok and a bit more fun as I felt a bit more confident. I think that I would have preferred a little less detail, but I wanted the client to be happy. She might have been anyway, but I pressure myself...

The washed out effect kind of lent itself to a old time feeeling a hot day in a quaint village. The first time I think I make the contrasts to strong.
I like the right side of the painting so much, the left seems a teeny bit flat, the roofs, but the sky is awesome. Maybe sometimes doing things twice give you a real buzz to keep in the final piece. Boy, look at what you were doing a year or so back, which was still good, and you can really seee the leaps you've taken. I have them all saved...

chirs totally-- I'd have never seen it if you didn't point it out. I wonder if you can see it in the original... digital does weird little things.
You had a nice composition to work from, and at first glance, I couldn't tell that this was painted from a photo. I get a real sense of that bright California light. Mentioned above . . . great sky . . . beautiful color choices.

The ironic thing is the roof was the best part of the other painting, this one I agree, not quite right.
I like the car, it looks like something the Pilsbury Doughboy would drive!
The comp leads me to the dome waaaaay back there. Nice little touches on that. I wouldn't have guessed this was from a photo either.

I accully work form photos quite a bit , but really try to just use themt as a jumping off point.
Gorgeous sky...your work is really maturing. Very pleasant to look at. My only picky thing is the shadow on the figure doesn't match the shadow direction on the buildings. Or maybe it's just the jpeg....anyhow, it's a lovely piece!!
hi there, I love this painting, I think you hit every note just right. The color and brush work is amazing...a very confident painting. The way you laid paint in this piece reminds me of the way Corot used to paint.
