Original

Laguna Rocks part 1

Went to Laguna a few weeks ago to Laguna with pal Richard for a Ray Roberts class. Ray was sick so we decided to paint anyway, all are 6x8 on linen a week later I re- painted all of these over( not shown) in the studio. Of the the new versions ( that I've posted 2) In my opinion one is better for it, one is just different and one is worse, but you can decide. These are scans of the originals that I did outside. They no longer exist as I painted over them. Now they are the studio versions.

Artist I like--

Ray Roberts

The split complement (green, orange, violet) as viewed on my monitor, works well here. I am enjoying all 3 paintings (a lot). The texturing on rock and wave is spectacular.. and that is a full compliment.

I like the fact that I don't see single strokes in weird places, I remember paintings where the textures were rock but is was supposed to be watery.

This is my favourite sort of subject and I can only envy the way you have captured the feel of rock with all of its nuances. These are great and I can't wait to see the studio works that derive from them. When you sya these are now gone, do you mean they are sold or destroyed?

I like the top one the best. It has a solid composition and an un-fussed with look to the brushwork. It will be interesting to compare these to the studio versions.

Hey everyone-- thanks to all! I re- wrote the description to make it clear what I did. And added another Ray Roberts.

Compositionally, I like no. three best because of overall balance. I do like the directness of the other two though. It looks like you were there oceanside on the same overcast day I was up the hill struggling with Alta Laguna. Looking forward to a glimpse of the studio versions.

I like all three of them, but then of course ... I like all of your paintings. I have been following you since you were a "nobody" way back when on wetcanvas.com and look at you now! You are a superstar painter!

Cool dude. I'm usually cooped up doing studio painting, these make me want to get out for some fresh plein-air.

i love the strong brushwork and awesome color - your work at times is reminiscent of indiana's c.w.mundy - he's a very fine fellow and a wonderful painter! i love the way you throw paint around!

I think the modeling on the rocks reads better and the horizon more distant in the studio versus the PA version, the second, just different and the third...

I was browsing through nucleus' online gallery and found your book. I then went ahead and searched you online and came across this blogspot. Ray Roberts is one of the new teachers at my college, Laguna College of Art and Design and I have the pleasure of taking one of his classes this semester. I was really jazzed to see the connection. Now since being in his class I've switched my career focus to plein aire and I'm completely inspired by works like Ray and yourself have created. Thanks for being an influence!
