Andy's

This one came off just a little bit to normal for me, but you can't hit a homerun every time and the blog must be fed. A Coffee shop on Colorado in Pasadena.
12x16 oil on wood

Got lazy and just picked out a grab bag of random artist scans I like

Has a late afternoon feel for me. The mood perhaps melancholy because of the purple.. but that is a plus and gives this painting a Hopper style ringing in my eyes. The value shifts and complements really pop the shapes in an enjoyable way. No doubt the coffee shop is the main attraction.

Yeah, it's a little less abstract than your pieces usually are, but probably necessary to get it to read as Andy's from that angle.

I am especially impressed by the Airstream in the alley painting. The drawing reads very realistic but the application of paint to the canvas is utterly abstract! Wow!

I photographed Andy's Coffe Shop a few years back, just couldn't find that "something" about it that captured my interest enough to paint it. But considering the subject, you did pretty darn well with it.

I love that Degas pic of the seated woman by the window, I saw it in London at the Courtauld Gallery. They've also got that self-portrait of Van Gogh with the bandaged ear.

I was seduced by the great gold light that's on there often. Perhaps light is not enough.

You'r being too hard on yourself, dude!
I agree with Bill Moore's official time-of-day assessment, although I don't catch a melancholy vibe, but that's just me. The whole dying sunlight thing does it for me.

Hey, I really enjoy your work. It's always cool to see an artist's take on the everyday images that suround us. I think your painting adds some magic to what we might otherwise miss.

Agree, you caught Andy's in a nothing special moment. I don't really see the gold but I know I've seen it appear many times.

Still, a special coffee shoppe from de 50s.

Too normal, eh? I can so relate.

It's a very good painting, regardless, perhaps just not as "energetic" as some of your others...

I find the sky particularly wonderful.

You might be too big for this, but I was wondering if you'd consider having two of your paintings on the cover of the next J Bloglandia.

No hard feelings if not. I'll still love your work.

I like it, it shows a grittier side of Pasadena, not the polished face of the city.

It's just a little tighter than your usual, Bill, but the Wray flare is there! Good stuff.

I think really good artists sometimes push their work to places where they are unhappy with the end result. I always enjoy seeing where you are going with your work.

Good artists, all of the first one to the last
You choose always a few very interesting hours to do paint
A picture is an adventure, I think that the final result almost the painter never chooses it.
You do I injure the arm?

Thanks, William. I went with two paintings from Raoul de la Sota for this issue, but I'll definitely be back for future issues, if you don't mind.
