Fair Girl

A young girl I saw at the LA county fair. I think she was ready to go home.

A Jerome contest painting... this was done on the day it snowed, but in the morning when it wasn't so bad, a bit of show a bit of sun. It was the afternoon that was the killer.

Amazing! The sheer reality of this
piece is amazing!
Very complex emotion you've captured here.
And you simply painted it.
I think your a friggin' genius Wm!

I like the second painting, it's got a very sombre feel to it. Great piece!

Love both of these but think that the first one is something really special. It has all of your great ability to get exactly the right range of values with a degree of sensitivity that is not always as easy to discern in some of your previous people paintings. There is a deep well of emotion in this portrait. Wonderful.

Great looking painting. Last time I was in Jerome was 1975, had an old beater Datsun and just enough gas money to get back to Tuscan.

Just read your comment on the "New Topographics" show. It was all academic nonsense back in the day, that has grown into the monster contemporary "art" we have today. It was the first generation of photographer doing what artists had been doing since 1960.

They claim to be inspired by Walker Evans, who is what you should be looking at, not this sterilized playthings of children. You are right, they simply show the same souless stuff over and over and over. I took shots like these, and threw most out as they werent art. It is extremely easy adn lazy to do. But did make some closer in feel to Evans, where mankind, nature and god are intertwined. As you do in your paintings.

They are simply illustrations of sites, done ad nauesum, shows had 30 of exactly the same thing, taking the pop music attitude that if you play it enough, people will begin to see or hear stuff that isnt really there, and get them hooked on a suspended belief system. It is psychological, Freud saw this, and called marketing propaganda, his grandkids were the first true marketers but used that term instead as it didnt sound so bad. This is academic progpaganda. Dont waste your time, you are far past it.

Donald,
I agree with you for the most part, I do find it kind of sad they need to dress up the intent of the shows aesthetic intentions of the photographers with art speak, but as you know I’m a nagger/ comedian, not an artistic earth scorcher like you. I’m going to try and look at the shows as a positive thing for the subjects I like despite half of the show being decidedly of below average quality.I'm going hope this kind of show can translate to a crack in the door to that phony world. As much as I’d like to burn down their house I have to accept that one needs to be invited in, if one whats to come inside in one’s lifetime as sadly I do.--

Like i said, check out Walker Evans and many other photographers, from Strand and Weston on. They simply want to market the art schools, this stuff is mostly MFA theses, stuff of kids, not adults. Its out there, but as with painting, its easier and more profitable to stick with the marketing scheme as is. Criticss are lazy too. They have been trained how to think and see a certain way, not feel, and lost what is instinctive and true. Just a bunch of Pavlovian dogs.

We all have our own way of doing things, this I respect, but not for lies and career over truth and art. Sports dont do this, let the stuff compete, but they rig the game, the good stuff is seldom seen, or advertised. Kafka at its finest. Or worst. I cant enjoy art this way, so dont. I would rather stay out of it, as it does exist in life.

I have really been enjoying the photos and the paintings from Sedona/Jerome. I figured it must be pretty cold when I saw a snap of you in MCJ's blog dressed up like for the Iditarod.

Really love the one with the old buses in morning light. Perfect.
